✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent a man from the Ansar to level every grave and to deface every idol. He said: O Messenger of God, I dislike entering the houses of my people. He said: So he sent me. When I came, he said: 'O Ali, do not be a tempter, nor a vainglorious one, nor a merchant except a merchant of good, for those are procrastinators'—or 'outstripped'—'in deeds.'

machine translationIt is narrated by al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah, and there is disagreement about him. Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj and al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh narrated it from al-Ḥakam, from Abū Muḥammad al-Hudhalī, from ʿAlī. Abān b. Taghlib differed from them: he narrated it from al-Ḥakam, from Thaʿlabah b. Yazīd al-Ḥimmānī, from ʿAlī. Ṭāriq b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān differed from them as well, narrating it from al-Ḥakam, from Qays b. Abī Ḥāzim, from ʿAlī. Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān said likewise, in what reached him from al-Ḥakam, from Qays. The closest of these to the correct view is the statement of Shuʿbah from al-Ḥakam.
