What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationJābir al-Juʿfī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. al-Thawrī narrated it from Jābir, from Muḥammad b. Qarẓah, from Abū Saʿīd. Abū Shaybah differed from him and narrated it from Jābir, from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, from Abū Saʿīd. The correct statement is that of al-Thawrī.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11387
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationHe is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī), and there is something to be examined in him (fīhi naẓar). They have spoken against Jābir al-Juʿfī, but Shuʿbah narrated from him and used to praise him well, and that is enough for you from someone like Shuʿbah.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11387

machine translationMuḥammad b. Qarẓah: nothing is known of his condition, as Ibn al-Qaṭṭān said. al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān: "No one narrated from him except Jābir al-Juʿfī." I say: However, Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in his al-Thiqāt. As for Ibn Ḥazm, he found it defective in al-Muḥallā because of Jābir, saying: "A poor report, and Jābir is a liar (kadhdhāb)."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11387
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationShuʿbah and Sufyān narrated it, and there is disagreement about it. Shuʿbah said: from Jābir, from Muḥammad b. Qarẓah, from Abū Saʿīd. al-Thawrī said: from Jābir, from Qarẓah, from Abū Saʿīd. He said: al-Thawrī has better memory.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11387
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationJābir al-Juʿfī is not to be used as proof, even though he was a memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), because of his bad doctrine. The imams narrated from him, among them al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11387
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIts transmission revolves around Jābir al-Juʿfī, and his teacher Muḥammad b. Qarẓah is unknown (ghayr maʿrūf).
