✧ During the expedition of Tabuk, the people suffered from hunger. They said: "O Messenger of God, if you would permit us, we would slaughter our water-carrying camels, eat, and use their fat." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: "Do so." Then ʿUmar came and said: "O Messenger of God, if they do that, the riding animals will become few. But call them to bring the surplus of their provisions, then invoke God for blessing upon them; perhaps God will place blessing in that." So the Messenger of God ﷺ called for a leather mat and spread it out, then he called them to bring the surplus of their provisions. A man would come with a handful of corn, another with a handful of dates, another with a piece of bread, until a small amount had gathered on the mat. Then he invoked God for blessing upon it, then said to them: "Take into your vessels." He said: So they took into their vessels until they left no vessel in the army without filling it, and they ate until they were full, and some of it remained. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I bear witness that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God: No servant meets God with these words, without doubt, but Paradise will be withheld from him."
