✧ Some people in Yemen dug a pit for a lion, and it fell into it. The people crowded around it, and a man fell into it. He grabbed another man, then that man grabbed another, until there were four of them in it. They disputed about that until some of them took up weapons against each other. Ali said to them: 'Would you kill two hundred (people) because of four? But I will judge among you with a judgment that, if you accept it, (settles the matter): For the first, a quarter of the blood-money; for the second, a third of the blood-money; for the third, half of the blood-money; and for the fourth, the full blood-money.' But they did not accept his judgment, so they came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: 'I will judge among you with a judgment.' He was informed of Ali's judgment, and he approved it.

machine translationThis Ḥanash is Ibn al-Muʿtamir, and some say Ibn Rabīʿah. He was a Follower (tābiʿī); Simāk and al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah narrated from him. al-Bukhārī said: "They speak about his ḥadīth," and he included this ḥadīth of his in his book of weak narrators (ḍuʿafāʾ). al-Nasāʾī said: "He is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī)." Ibn Ḥibbān said: "He is not to be used as evidence; he is alone in narrating from ʿAlī things that do not resemble the ḥadīth of the trustworthy." al-Bayhaqī said: "He is not to be used as evidence." Abū Ḥātim said: "He was a righteous servant, but I do not think they use his ḥadīth as evidence." Abū Dāwūd declared him trustworthy (thiqah). al-Bazzār said about this ḥadīth of his: "We know of him only narrating from ʿAlī, and we know of no route for it from ʿAlī except this route."
