✧ I was riding behind 'Ali. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: 'In the name of God.' When he settled, he said: 'Praise be to God, glory to the One who subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it ourselves. And indeed to our Lord we will return.' Abu Sa'id, the client of Banu Hashim, said: 'Then he praised God three times, and said Allahu Akbar three times, then said: Glory be to God three times, then said: There is no god but You.' Then he returned to the hadith of Waki': 'Glory be to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.' Then he laughed. I said: 'What makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was riding behind the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he did just as you saw me do, then he laughed. I said: O Messenger of God, what makes you laugh? He said: God, Blessed and Exalted, said: "I marvel at My servant who knows that none forgives sins except Me."'

machine translationAbū Ziyād al-Qaṭṭān narrated to me from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, who said: I used to be amazed at the hadith of ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah, "I was riding behind ʿAlī", because ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah was a youth in the time of ʿAlī, and I denied that someone like him could have been riding behind ʿAlī, until Sufyān narrated to us from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah. I said to Sufyān: Did Abū Isḥāq hear it from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah? He said: I asked Abū Isḥāq about it, and he said: A man narrated it to me from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah.
