حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ
إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِكَثْرَةِ سُؤَالِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ، لَا تَسْأَلُونِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حُذَافَةَ: مَنْ أَبِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: أَبُوكَ حُذَافَةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ. فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أُمِّهِ فَقَالَتْ: وَيْحَكَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى الَّذِي صَنَعْتَ ؟ فَقَدْ كُنَّا أَهْلَ جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَأَهْلَ أَعْمَالٍ قَبِيحَةٍ، فَقَالَ لَهَا: إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأُحِبُّ أَنْ أَعْلَمَ مَنْ أَبِي مَنْ كَانَ مِنَ النَّاسِ
Translation

✧ Those before you were destroyed only by their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets. Do not ask me about anything except that I will inform you of it. Abd Allah b. Hudhafah said: Who is my father, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Your father is Hudhafah b. Qays. He returned to his mother and she said: Woe to you! What made you do what you did? We were people of ignorance and people of ugly deeds. He said to her: I only wished to know who my father was among the people.
