Chain of narrators
  1. Abū Hurayrah

✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, whoever fights in the cause of Allah, will he enter Paradise? He said: Yes. He paused for a while as if he had heard something, then asked: Where is the questioner from earlier? The man stood up. The Prophet ﷺ said: What did you say? The man replied: I said: What do you think of one who strives in the cause of Allah and is killed—will he enter Paradise? You said: Yes. The Prophet ﷺ then said: Indeed, Gabriel informed me of that, unless he has a debt.

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from his father, who said: A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man who is killed in the way of Allah, patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating: will Allah expiate his sins?" He said, "Yes, except for debt. Thus Jibrīl informed me." He said: It is narrated by Muḥammad b. Qays b. Makhramah and Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from his father, and there is disagreement about both of them. As for Muḥammad b. Qays, his hadith was narrated by Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and there is disagreement about him. Ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī and Ibn Abī ʿAbdillāh al-Muqriʾ narrated it from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿAmr b. Dīnār and Ibn ʿAjlān, who both heard Muḥammad b. Qays, from Ibn Abī Qatādah, from his father. In this chain there is an error (wahm). Rather, ʿAmr b. Dīnār narrated it from Muḥammad b. Qays as a mursal report without a chain. Ibn ʿAjlān narrated it from Muḥammad b. Qays, from Ibn Abī Qatādah, from his father; this was made clear by Muḥammad b. Maymūn al-Khayyāṭ, Fahm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Fahm, ʿAbbās b. Yazīd and Saʿdān b. Naṣr, from Ibn ʿUyaynah. As for Saʿīd al-Maqburī, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī narrated from him, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Thawrī, Zuhayr, ʿAlī b. Mushir, Bishr b. al-Mufaḍḍal, Ibn Jurayj and Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from his father. Mālik b. Anas said likewise from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, but there is disagreement about Mālik. Maʿn, Ibn Wahb, Abū Muṣʿab, Ibn Bukayr and the narrators of the Muwaṭṭaʾ said, from Mālik, from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī. Al-Qaʿnabī and Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī contradicted them and narrated it from Mālik, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, omitting Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd from the chain. The statement of those who said, from Mālik, from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī, is more correct (aṣaḥḥ). Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Qatādah. Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd and al-Zubayrī Abū Khālid, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Qatādah; they did not mention Ibn Abī Qatādah in it. Al-Muqaddamī said, from Ḥammād b. Zayd, from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Qatādah, or from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from his father. Al-Layth b. Saʿd and Ibn Abī Dhiʾb narrated it from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from his father. ʿAbbād b. Isḥāq, who is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq, and Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān narrated it from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, and both erred in it. This hadith was also narrated from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, as a mursal report; this was said by ʿAṭāʾ b. Jabalah, from Ibn Jurayj, from al-Zuhrī, who was alone in it. The correct statement is that of those who narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from al-Maqburī, from Ibn Abī Qatādah, from his father, as al-Layth and Ibn Abī Dhiʾb corroborated it from al-Maqburī on that.
