حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ، قَالَ:
دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَالْأَشْتَرُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ عَهِدَ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَعْهَدْهُ إِلَى النَّاسِ عَامَّةً ؟ قَالَ: لَا، إِلَّا مَا فِي كِتَابِي هَذَا، قَالَ: فَأَخْرَجَ كِتَابًا مِنْ قِرَابِ سَيْفِهِ، فَإِذَا فِيهِ: الْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ، وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ، وَيَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ، لَا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ، وَلَا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ، مَنْ أَحْدَثَ حَدَثًا، أَوْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا، فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ، وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
Translation

✧ Al-Ashtar and I entered upon ʿAli and he said: Did the Messenger of God ﷺ entrust to you something he did not entrust to the people generally? He said: No, except what is in this document of mine. He said: Then he brought out a document from the scabbard of his sword, and in it was: The believers' blood is equal, and they are one hand against those besides them, and the lowest of them may give protection on their behalf. A believer is not to be killed for a disbeliever, nor one with a covenant while his covenant stands. Whoever introduces an innovation or shelters an innovator, upon him is the curse of God, the angels, and all people.
