✧ We were in an army that the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent, and the people fled in a rout, and we were defeated and we were a small group. We said, 'Shall we flee in the land and not come to the Messenger of God ﷺ, out of shame for what we did?' Then some of us said, 'If we came to Madinah, we could buy provisions from it and prepare ourselves.' When we entered Madinah, we said, 'If we presented ourselves to the Prophet ﷺ?' He said, 'We waited for him at the dawn prayer. When the Messenger of God ﷺ came out, we said, 'O Messenger of God, we are the deserters.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Rather, you are the ones who return to fight; I am the group of the Muslims.'
