حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِي يَعْلَى، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ:
خَطَّ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَطًّا مُرَبَّعًا، وَخَطَّ وَسَطَهُ خُطُوطًا هَكَذَا إِلَى جَانِبِ الْخَطِّ، وَخَطَّ خَطًّا خَارِجًا، فَقَالَ: أَتَدْرُونَ مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: هَذَا الْإِنْسَانُ - لِلْخَطِّ الَّذِي وَسَطَ الْخَطِّ -، وَهَذَا الْأَجَلُ، وَهَذِهِ الْأَعْرَاضُ - لِلْخُطُوطِ - تَنْهَشُهُ، إِذَا أَخْطَأَهُ هَذَا أَصَابَهُ هَذَا، وَذَلِكَ الْأَمَلُ - لِلْخَطِّ الْخَارِجِ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a square line for us, and he drew lines in its middle like this, to the side of the line, and he drew a line outside. He said: Do you know what this is? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: This is the human being - for the line which is in the middle of the line - and this is the appointed time, and these are the things that harm him - for the lines - they bite him; if this one misses him, this one strikes him, and that is hope - for the outer line.
