✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ, when he intended to set out on a journey, would draw lots among his wives; whichever of them her lot came out, he took her out with him. Aisha said: So he drew lots among us for a raid he undertook; my lot came out for it, and I went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ after the veil had been revealed. I was carried in a howdah and let down from it. We traveled until, when the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished that raid of his and turned back, and we drew near Madinah returning, he gave us permission to set out at night. I got up when he gave permission and walked until I had passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business, I came back to my baggage and felt my chest, and found that a necklace of mine made of Dhafir beads had broken. I went back and searched for my necklace, and its search detained me. She said: The party who used to load my howdah came and lifted it up and placed it on my camel that I used to ride, thinking that I was in it. Women in those days were light, not yet weighed down by flesh; we ate only morsels of food. The people did not notice the lightness of the howdah, so they lifted it and loaded it. I was a girl of young age. They sent the camel off and departed. I found my necklace after the army had moved on. I came to their camp, but there was no one calling or answering. I made for the place where I had been staying, and I thought they would miss me and return to me. While I was sitting at my place, sleep overcame me and I slept. Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami, then al-Dhakwani, was behind the army; he had set out late and reached my place in the morning. He saw the dark shape of a sleeping person and recognized me when he saw me, for he used to see me before the veil. I woke up at his saying 'Indeed we belong to God and to Him we return' when he recognized me, and I covered my face with my outer garment. By God, I did not speak a word, and I did not hear from him a word other than his 'Indeed we belong to God' when he made his riding camel kneel and stepped on its foreleg. I got up and mounted it. He set off leading the camel until we came to the army while they were encamped. She said: Then those who perished perished, and the one who took the greatest part in it among them was 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. 'Urwa said: I was told that it was being circulated and talked about in his presence, and he would affirm it, spread it, and seek it out. Ibrahim said: meaning he would seek it out. 'Urwa said: No one among the people of the slander was named except Mistah b. Uthatha and Hamna bt. Jahsh, along with others I do not know, except that they were a group, as God said, and the greatest part of it was attributed to 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. 'Urwa said: Aisha disliked that Hassan b. Thabit be reviled in her presence, and she said: It is he who said: 'Indeed my father, his father, and my honor are a protection for the honor of Muhammad from you.' Aisha said: I arrived in Madinah and fell ill for a month after my arrival, while the people were engrossed in the talk of the people of the slander, and I was unaware of any of that. What troubled me in my sickness was that I did not recognize from the Messenger of God ﷺ the kindness I used to see when I was ill; he would only come in to me and say, 'How is this one of yours?' and leave. That is what troubled me, and I did not realize until I went out after I had recovered. I went out with Umm Mistah toward al-Manas', which was our place for relieving ourselves. Our practice was that of the early Arabs regarding sanitation: before the privy, we disliked the latrines and did not adopt them near our houses. She said: I set off, I and Umm Mistah, who was the daughter of Abu Ruhm b. al-Muttalib b. 'Abd Manaf, and her mother was the daughter of Sakhr b. 'Amir, the maternal aunt of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and her son was Mistah b. Uthatha b. 'Abbad b. 'Abd al-Muttalib. I came, I and Umm Mistah, toward my house after we had finished our business. Umm Mistah stumbled in her long garment and said, 'May Mistah perish!' I said to her, 'How bad is what you said! Do you revile a man who was present at Badr?' She said, 'O you, have you not heard what he said?' I said, 'And what did he say?' She told me what the people of the slander had said. She said: I increased in sickness upon my sickness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon me and said, 'How is this one of yours?' I said, 'Permit me to go to my parents.' She said: I wanted to ascertain the news from them. The Messenger of God ﷺ permitted me, so I went to them and said to my mother, 'O Mother, what are the people saying?' She said, 'Take it lightly, for by God, seldom has a woman been beautiful and loved by her husband, having co-wives, except that they exaggerate against her.' She said: I said, 'Glory be to God! Have the people really been talking about this?' She said: I wept that night until morning; my tears did not cease, and I did not taste sleep. She said: Then I woke up weeping. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called 'Ali b. Abi Talib and Usama b. Zayd to consult them about separating from his wife. She said: As for Usama b. Zayd, he advised the Messenger of God ﷺ according to what he knew of his wife's innocence and what he knew of his own feelings toward them. Usama b. Zayd said, 'O Messenger of God, she is your family, and we know nothing but good.' As for 'Ali, he said, 'O Messenger of God, God has not made women scarce for you; women other than her are many. Ask the slave girl, and she will tell you the truth.' She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called Barira and said, 'O Barira, have you seen anything that troubles you?' Barira said to him, 'By Him who sent you with the truth, I have never seen anything about her that I could find fault with, except that she is a young girl who sleeps over her family's dough, and then the domestic animal comes and eats it.' The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up that day and sought to be excused from 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul while he was on the pulpit. He said, 'O assembly of Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harm concerning my family has reached me? By God, I know nothing but good about my family, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he never entered my family except with me.' Sa'd b. Mu'adh, one of the Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal, stood up and said, 'O Messenger of God, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, I will strike his neck; if he is from our brothers of the Khazraj, you commanded us, and we will do what you commanded us.' He said: A man from the Khazraj stood up, and Umm Hassan was a daughter of his paternal cousin from his clan, and he was Sa'd b. 'Ubada, the chief of the Khazraj. He was a righteous man, but partisanship carried him away. He said to Sa'd b. Mu'adh, 'You have lied! By the life of God, you will not kill him, nor can you kill him. If he had been from your clan, you would not have liked to kill him.' Usayd b. Hudayr, who was the cousin of Sa'd b. Mu'adh, stood up and said to Sa'd b. 'Ubada, 'You have lied! By the life of God, we will surely kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites.' She said: The two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, rose up until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting on the pulpit. The Messenger of God ﷺ kept calming them until they fell silent, and he fell silent. She said: I wept that whole day; my tears did not cease, and I did not taste sleep. She said: My parents came to me in the morning; I wept all that day and night; my tears did not cease, and I did not taste sleep. She said: Until I thought that weeping would split my liver. She said: While my parents were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman of the Ansar asked permission to enter upon me, and I permitted her. She sat down weeping with me. She said: While we were in that state, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered, greeted, and sat down. She said: He had not sat with me since what was said to me had been said. He had remained a month without receiving revelation concerning my affair. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ recited the shahada when he sat, then said, 'To proceed, O Aisha, it has reached me about you such and such. If you are innocent, God will declare you innocent; if you have committed a sin, ask God's forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses and repents, God turns to him.' She said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his speech, my tears dried up so that I felt not a drop. I said to my father, 'Answer the Messenger of God on my behalf regarding what he said.' He said, 'By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God ﷺ.' She said: I said to my mother, 'Answer the Messenger of God on my behalf regarding what he said.' She said, 'By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God ﷺ.' She said: I said, while I was a young girl who did not read much of the Quran, 'Indeed, by God, I know, and you have heard, until it settled in your hearts and you believed it. If I say to you that I am innocent, you will not believe me. If I confess to something, and God knows that I am innocent of it, you will believe me. By God, I find no example for me and for you except the father of Joseph when he said: So patience is most fitting, and God is the One sought for help against what you describe.' She said: Then I turned and lay down on my bed. God knew then that I was innocent, and God would declare me innocent with my innocence, but by God, I did not think that God would send down revelation concerning my affair, for my affair was too insignificant in my own eyes for God to speak about me with a clarifying matter. But I hoped that the Messenger of God ﷺ would see a dream in which God would declare me innocent. She said: By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not rise from his seat, nor did anyone of the household leave, until God sent down upon him. He was seized by what used to seize him from the intense revelation, until sweat dripped from him like pearls, even though it was a cold day, because of the weight of the Quran that was being sent down upon him. She said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ was relieved, and he was laughing. The first word he spoke was, 'O Aisha, as for God, He has declared you innocent.' She said: My mother said, 'Get up to him.' I said, 'By God, I will not get up to him, and I praise no one but God.' God sent down: 'Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you...' the verses. When God sent this down concerning my innocence, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who was spending on Mistah b. Uthatha because of his kinship and poverty, said, 'By God, I will never spend anything on Mistah after what he said about Aisha.' Then God sent down: 'Let not those of virtue among you and abundance swear not to give to the near of kin...' until His saying: 'And God is Forgiving, Merciful.' Abu Bakr said, 'Yes, by God, I love that God should forgive me.' He returned to Mistah the spending he used to give him. He said, 'By God, I will never take it away from him.' She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ had asked Zaynab bt. Jahsh about my affair. He said to Zaynab, 'What do you know or what have you seen?' She said, 'O Messenger of God, I guard my hearing and my sight. By God, I know nothing but good.' Aisha said: She was the one who used to rival me among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, but God protected her through piety. Her sister Hamna began to fight, and she perished among those who perished. Ibn Shihab said: This is what reached me from the account of these people.
