✧ The people talked about this matter, and it spread among them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to give a sermon, and I was unaware of it. She said: One night I went out with Umm Mistah to relieve myself, and she stumbled and said: May Mistah perish. I said: Glory be to Allah, why do you insult your son when he is among the first emigrants and witnessed Badr? She said: By Allah, I do not insult him except because of you. I said: What is my affair? She informed me of the matter, and my need went away, and I felt nothing. I became feverish and went home, and there was my mother below, and my father on top of the house praying. She embraced me and wept, and I wept. Abu Bakr heard our weeping and said: What is the matter with my daughter? My mother said: She has heard that news. He said: Stay where you are until we go in the morning to the Messenger of Allah. We went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with him was a woman of the Ansar. The presence of that woman did not prevent the Prophet ﷺ from speaking. He said: O Aisha, if you have done wrong or erred, then seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. I said to my father: Speak. He said: What shall I say? I said to my mother: Speak. She said: What shall I say? I praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: By Allah, if I say, 'I did it,' and Allah knows I did not do it, you will say, 'She has confessed.' And if I say, 'I did not do it,' and Allah knows I did not do it, you will say, 'She has lied.' I find no example for me and you except what the righteous servant said - I forgot his name - I said: the father of Yusuf: 'So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon a Nubian slave girl and said: O so-and-so, what do you know of Aisha? She said: By Allah, I know no fault in Aisha except that she sleeps, and the domestic animal enters and eats her dough and her mat. When she realized what he wanted, she said: By Allah, I know nothing of Aisha except what the goldsmith knows of pure red gold. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and said: Advise me, O assembly of Muslims, regarding people who have slandered my family. By Allah, I have never known any evil from my family, and they slandered them because of whom? By Allah, I have never known any evil from him, and he never entered my house except with me present, and I never traveled except with him. Sa'd b. Mu'adh said: I think, O Messenger of Allah, that you should strike their necks. Men from the Khazraj stood up and said: By Allah, if they were from your tribe, the Aws, you would not have ordered their necks to be struck, until there was almost a conflict between the Aws and the Khazraj. And revelation came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Aisha said: It was not lifted from him until I saw joy between his eyes. He said: Rejoice, O Aisha, Allah has sent down your excuse. My parents said: Rise, and kiss the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: I praise Allah, not you two. He recited to them the Quran: 'Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For each person among them is what he earned of sin, and the one who took upon himself the greater part of it will have a great punishment. And why, when you heard it, did you not say, 'It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, this is a great slander'?' Among those who took upon themselves the greater part were Hassan b. Thabit, Mistah b. Uthathah, and Hamnah bt. Jahsh. It was spoken of in the presence of 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy, and he would hear it, seek it out, and spread it. When Hassan b. Thabit was insulted in the presence of Aisha, she said: Do not insult Hassan, for he used to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then she said: What punishment is greater than the loss of his two eyes? And the one about whom it was said what was said said: By Allah, I have never uncovered the side of any female, and he was killed as a martyr in the way of Allah. Hassan b. Thabit said, contradicting himself: 'Chaste and composed, she is not suspected of any fault, and she rises hungry from the flesh of the heedless. If I have said what you have claimed, then may my whip never be carried by my fingers. How could it be, when my love, as long as I live, and my support are for the family of the Messenger of Allah, the adornment of gatherings? Would I insult the best of people as a husband, as a father, and as a soul? I have indeed been brought down to the worst of stations.'
