حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسٌ، عَنْ أَبِي سَهْلَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:

ادْعُوا لِي بَعْضَ أَصْحَابِي، قُلْتُ: أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قُلْتُ: عُمَرُ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قُلْتُ: ابْنُ عَمِّكَ عَلِيٌّ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قُلْتُ: مَنْ ؟ قَالَ: عُثْمَانُ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ: تَنَحَّيْ، فَجَعَلَ يُسَارُّهُ، وَلَوْنُ عُثْمَانَ يَتَغَيَّرُ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الدَّارِ وَحُصِرَ، قُلْنَا: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أَلَا تُقَاتِلُ ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ عَهْدًا، وَإِنِّي صَابِرٌ نَفْسِي عَلَيْهِ

Translation

✧ Call for me one of my companions. I said: Abu Bakr? He said: No. I said: Umar? He said: No. I said: Your cousin Ali? He said: No. I said: Who? He said: Uthman. When he came, he said: Move aside. Then he began to speak to him in confidence, and Uthman's color changed. When the day of the house came and he was besieged, we said: O Commander of the Believers, will you not fight? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ made a covenant with me, and I am patiently restraining myself for it.
