حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ، قَالَ:

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ: رَجُلٌ مِنْ قَوْمِي، وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ، أَحْسَبُهُ، فَبَعَثَنَا وَجْهًا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ، فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ، فَقَضَى حَاجَتَهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ، فَتَمَسَّحَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، قَالَ: فَكَأَنَّهُ رَآنَا أَنْكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْضِي حَاجَتَهُ، ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ فَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ عَنْ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ، لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةُ

Translation

✧ I entered upon ‘Ali b. Abi Talib, I and two men: a man from my people and a man from Banu Asad, I think. He sent us on a mission and said: “You two are sturdy fellows, so strive for your religion.” Then he entered the privy, relieved himself, then came out, took a handful of water, and wiped himself with it. Then he began to recite the Quran. He said: It was as if he saw that we disapproved of that, so he said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ used to relieve himself, then come out and recite the Quran, and eat meat with us, and nothing prevented him from reciting the Quran except major ritual impurity.”
