✧ A man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, I saw in a dream a canopy dripping clarified butter and honey. People were taking from it, some taking much and some taking little, and others in between. And it was as if a rope was let down from the sky. You came and took hold of it and ascended, and God raised you. Then a man came after you, took hold of it, and ascended, and God raised him. Then a man came after you two, took hold of it, and ascended. Then a man came after you, took hold of it, but it was cut off for him, then reconnected, and he ascended, and God raised him." Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of God, permit me to interpret it." He permitted him, and Abu Bakr said: "As for the canopy, it is Islam. As for the clarified butter and honey, it is the Quran. As for the rope, it is what you are upon: you ascend and God raises you. Then there will be a man after you on your path who ascends and God raises him. Then there will be a man after you two who takes hold of what you two took hold of and ascends and God raises him. Then there will be a man after you on your path, but it will be cut off for him, then reconnected, and he ascends and God raises him." The Prophet ﷺ said: "You have been right and wrong." Abu Bakr said: "I adjure you, O Messenger of God, to tell me." He said: "Do not adjure me."
