✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us, six hundred men, with Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ, and we had with us only a sack of dates. He said: So we divided it, and each man among us received five dates or seven dates. We ate them until hunger overtook us. He said: We started sucking the date stones. When hunger overtook us, we went to the seashore, and there was a huge creature like a large sand dune from which the water had receded. Some of us said: "Shall we eat this when it is dead meat?" Abū ʿUbaydah said: "You are warriors in the path of Allah, eat, for there is no harm." So we ate from it, salted some of it, and took provisions. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we mentioned that to him, and he said: "There is no harm in it. Does any of you have any of it to feed me?" He said: Some of us said to others: "Yes." So we sent some of it to him.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThey relied on the hadith of Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir: "What the sea casts up or leaves behind by receding, eat it; and what dies in it and floats, do not eat it." Abū Dāwūd recorded it as marfūʿ (traced to the Prophet ﷺ) from the narration of Yaḥyā b. Sulaym al-Ṭāʾifī, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir. Then he said: Al-Thawrī, Ayyūb and others narrated this hadith from Abū al-Zubayr as mawqūf (a statement of the Companion). It was also traced back through a weak route from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir as marfūʿ. Al-Tirmidhī said: I asked al-Bukhārī about it and he said: It is not preserved (maḥfūẓ), and the opposite of it is narrated from Jābir. End of quote. Yaḥyā b. Sulaym is truthful (ṣadūq), though they described him as having poor memory. Al-Nasāʾī said: He is not strong. Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān said: When he narrates from his book, his hadith is good (ḥasan); when he narrates from memory, he is known for some and rejected for others. Abū Ḥātim said: He was not a memorizer (ḥāfiẓ). Ibn Ḥibbān said in al-Thiqāt: He used to make mistakes. He was followed in raising it to the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Dāraquṭnī recorded it from the narration of Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī, from al-Thawrī, as marfūʿ, but said: Wakīʿ and others differed from him and made it mawqūf from al-Thawrī, and that is correct. It is also narrated from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb and Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah as marfūʿ, but that is not sound; the sound version is mawqūf. And if it is sound only as mawqūf, then it is contradicted by the statement of Abū Bakr and others.

machine translationNo one transmitted it as musnad (traced to the Prophet ﷺ) from al-Thawrī except Abū Aḥmad. Wakīʿ, the two ʿAdanīs, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Muʾammal, Abū ʿĀṣim and others differed from him; they narrated it from al-Thawrī as mawqūf, and that is correct. Likewise Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar, Ibn Jurayj, Zuhayr, Ḥammād b. Salamah and others narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr as mawqūf. It is also narrated from Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah and Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, from Abū al-Zubayr, as marfūʿ, but raising it is not sound. Yaḥyā b. Sulaym raised it from Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah, while others made it mawqūf.
