machine translationI said to my father: "Are the two of them sound (ṣaḥīḥ)?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Is Ḥabīb's narration from al-Nuʿmān connected?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Is al-Ḥasan's narration from Salamah connected?" They both said: "No. Al-Qāsim b. Sallām narrated to us from his father, from al-Ḥasan, who said: Qabīṣah b. Ḥurayth narrated to me, from Salamah b. al-Muḥabbiq, from the Prophet ﷺ." So they put Qabīṣah b. Ḥurayth between them, and the chain became connected. I said: "Al-Ḥasan heard from Salamah, and Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Ṭāʾifī narrated from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from al-Ḥasan: I heard Salamah b. al-Muḥabbiq." He said: "This, in my view, is a mistake and is not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ)." I said: "Qatādah is subject to disagreement in this. Abān narrates from Qatādah, who said: Khālid b. ʿUrfuṭah narrated to us, from Ḥabīb b. Sālim, from al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr. And Hammām narrated from Qatādah, from Ḥabīb b. Yasāf, from Ḥabīb b. Sālim, from al-Nuʿmān. Which of these is more likely?" He said: "The ḥadīth of Hammām is more likely. Ḥabīb b. Yasāf is unknown (majhūl); I do not know anyone who narrated from him other than Qatādah, this one ḥadīth. Likewise Khālid b. ʿUrfuṭah is unknown (majhūl); we do not know anyone called Khālid b. ʿUrfuṭah except the one who was a Companion."
