What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThis hadith has no basis among the hadiths of Ibn Jābir, and no one narrated this hadith except Abū al-Ashhab and Salm b. Razīn. I said to my father: Did anyone besides this shaykh narrate this hadith from Ibn Jābir? He said: No. I said: What is the status of this shaykh, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. al-Walīd? My father said: His affair is inconsistent (muḍṭarib). He narrated from Sharīk, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl, from Jābir, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "If a slave marries without the permission of his master, he is a fornicator." My father said: This hadith is not from the narrations of Sharīk; Zuhayr and al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ narrated it, and I do not know that Sharīk narrated this hadith.

  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationThis hadith is not authentic (lā yaṣiḥḥ), for it is from the narration of Abū al-Ashhab, and there is disagreement about him. Most say from him, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṭarafah b. ʿArfajah, from his grandfather, while Ibn ʿUlayyah says from him, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṭarafah, from his father, from ʿArfajah. He said: According to the method of the hadith scholars, the narration of the majority should be disconnected (munqaṭiʿ), since it is transmitted with the ambiguous "from" (muʿanʿan), and Ibn ʿUlayyah added one more person in it. It is not known how this agrees with their statement that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṭarafah heard from his grandfather, and the statement of Yazīd b. Zurayʿ that he heard from his grandfather, since in this hadith it is not said that he heard it from him, and the father is inserted between them in it. On this basis, the said ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṭarafah is not known except through this hadith, and no one is known to have narrated from him except Abū al-Ashhab. And if his father Ṭarafah is needed in it, as Ibn ʿUlayyah said from Abū al-Ashhab, the situation is the same, for he is of unknown status (not known in condition), and is not mentioned among the narrators of reports.
