The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone who is sexual defiled leaves a spot equal to the breadth of a hair without washing, such and such an amount of Hell-fire will have to be suffered for it. Ali said: On that account I treated my head (hair) as an enemy, meaning I cut my hair. He used to cut the hair (of his head). May Allah be pleased with him.
Notes
machine translationʿAlī said: "From that time I have been hostile to my head, from that time I have been hostile to my head," three times. And he used to shave off his hair.

machine translationIts chain is sound (ṣaḥīḥ), but it has been said that the correct position is that it is a statement stopped at ʿAlī (mawqūf).

machine translationʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib narrates it from Zādhān from ʿAlī. Ḥammād b. Salamah, Shuʿbah and Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar narrated it from him. ʿAbdullāh b. Rashīd narrated it from Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth from al-Aʿmash and Layth from Zādhān from ʿAlī. It is also narrated from Ḥammād b. Zayd from ʿAṭāʾ from Zādhān from ʿAlī as a statement stopped at him (mawqūf). Likewise al-Aswad b. ʿĀmir said from Ḥammād b. Salamah. ʿAffān raised it to the Prophet (marfūʿ) from Ḥammād b. Salamah and Shuʿbah from ʿAṭāʾ. But ʿAṭāʾ's memory had changed, and what is preserved (maḥfūẓ) from ʿAffān is from Ḥammād, who said: "I heard him mention from ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib." The narrator then misread it and said "Shuʿbah".

machine translationIn its chain is ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib. Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī declared him trustworthy (thiqah), and al-Bukhārī transmitted one hadith from him joined with Abū Bishr. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: "His hadith is not to be used as proof," and others also criticised him. He had changed (taghayyara) at the end of his life. Imam Aḥmad said: "Whoever heard from him early on, his hearing is sound, and whoever heard from him later, it is worth nothing." More than one scholar agreed with him on this distinction.
