Show the chain

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took a vow in the pre-Islamic days to spend a night or a day in devotion near the Ka'bah (in the sacred mosque). He asked the Prophet ﷺ about it. He said: Observe i'tikaf (i.e. spend a night or a day near the Ka'bah) and fast.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIn it is ʿAbdullāh b. Budayl, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).

machine translationI do not know of the mention of fasting together with spiritual retreat (iʿtikāf) in this chain except in the narration of ʿAbdullāh b. Budayl from ʿAmr b. Dīnār. He said: ʿAbdullāh b. Budayl also has other things besides what I have mentioned for which he is criticized, such as additions in the text (matn) or in the chain (isnād).

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Budayl was alone in transmitting this from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, and the narration of the one who narrated "a day" is anomalous (shādhdh).

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIbn Budayl was alone in transmitting it from ʿAmr, and he is weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth).

machine translationThis is a rejected (munkar) hadith, because the trustworthy (thiqāt) students of ʿAmr did not mention fasting in it, among them Ibn Jurayj, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Ḥammād b. Salamah, Ḥammād b. Zayd and others, and Ibn Budayl is weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth).

  • Zarqānī

machine translationThe claim that the narration of "a day" is anomalous (shādhdh) is not to be heard, since reconciling the narrations is possible.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Budayl b. Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī was alone in transmitting it from ʿAmr, and he is weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth).

  • Dāraquṭnī
