What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationWe do not know it as a raised (marfūʿ) report except from the hadith of Hammām, meaning Ibn Yaḥyā.

  • Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd

machine translationIts chain meets the criterion of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationHe considered it odd (gharīb) while also declaring it sound (ṣaḥīḥ).

  • Ishbīlī

machine translationIt is an authentic (thābit) report, but its defect (ʿillah) is that Hammām was alone in transmitting it, and that Hammām narrated it from Qatādah and said: "It used to be said."

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationḤammād b. Zayd narrated it from Ayyūb from Abū Qilābah as a mursal report.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationIt is reported from al-Bukhārī that he said: Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated it from Ayyūb from Abū Qilābah as a mursal report. Then he said: The hadith of Hammām is more likely correct, and he is trustworthy (thiqah) and a retentive memorizer (ḥāfiẓ).
