Answering Which Hour Is The Hour Of Response On Friday

Show the chain

‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar said to me: Did you hear your father narrating a tradition from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about an hour on Friday (when supplication is accepted by Allah)? I said: Yes, I heard it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: This hour is found during the period when the imam is seated (for giving Friday sermon) until the prayer is finished. Abu Dawud said: By sitting is meant sitting on the pulpit.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIt was declared defective (muʿall) for being broken in transmission (inqiṭāʿ) and for inconsistency (iḍṭirāb). As for the break: Makhramah b. Bukayr did not hear from his father. Aḥmad said this from Ḥammād b. Khālid from Makhramah himself. Likewise Saʿīd b. Abī Maryam said from Mūsā b. Salamah from Makhramah, and he added: "They are only writings that we had." ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: "I did not hear any of the people of Madinah say that Makhramah said in any of his narrations, 'I heard my father.'" It cannot be said that Muslim is satisfied, for a narration with "from" (muʿanʿan), with the possibility of meeting together with contemporaneity, and that is the case here. For we say: Makhramah's explicit statement that he did not hear from his father is sufficient for the claim of a break. As for the inconsistency: Abū Isḥāq, Wāṣil al-Aḥdab, Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah and others narrated it from Abū Burdah as his own statement. These are people of Kūfah, and Abū Burdah was a Kūfan, so they know his narration better than Bukayr the Madinan. They are many and he is one. Moreover, had Abū Burdah had it as a raised report (marfūʿ), he would not have given a ruling on it by his own opinion, unlike a raised report. For this reason al-Dāraquṭnī was certain that the stopped version (mawqūf) is the correct one.
