عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ قَالَ:
أَتَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ ابْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ: يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ، أُحَدِّثُكَ بِمَا نَصْنَعُ فِي مَغَازِينَا ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: فَحَدِّثْنِي مَا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابُهُ يَصْنَعُونَ ؟ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا حَلَّ بِالْقَرْيَةِ دَعَا أَهْلَهَا إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَإِنِ اتَّبَعُوهُ خَلَطَهُمْ بِنَفْسِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، وَإِنْ أَبَوْا دَعَاهُمْ إِلَى إِعْطَاءِ الْجِزْيَةِ، فَإِنْ أَعْطَوْهَا قَبِلَهَا مِنْهُمْ، وَإِنْ أَبَوْا آذَنَهُمْ عَلَى سَوَاءٍ، وَكَانَ أَدْنَاهُمْ إِذَا أَعْطَاهُمُ الْعَهْدَ وَفَّوْا لَهُ أَجْمَعُونَ ".
Translation
✧ A man from the people of Syria came to Ibn al-Musayyab and said to him: O Abu Muhammad, shall I tell you what we do in our campaigns? He said: No. He said: Then tell me what the Prophet ﷺ and his companions used to do. He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ encamped at a village, he called its people to Islam. If they followed him, he mixed them with himself and his companions. If they refused, he called them to give the jizya. If they gave it, he accepted it from them. If they refused, he proclaimed war against them on equal terms. And the least of them, if he gave them the pact, they all fulfilled it for him.
