✧ A man goes to battle while his father disapproves

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ قَالَ:
سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا حِينَ هُزِمْنَا الْجَمَاجِمَ فَذَكَرْنَاهُ لِأَصْحَابِنَا فَقَالُوا: هَذَا الْمَعْرُورُ بْنُ سُوَيْدٍ قَالَ: ذُكِرَ لِعُمَرَ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَقُتِلَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: لَأَنْ أَمُوتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِي خَيْرٌ لِي مِنْ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ أَمَامَ صَفٍّ
Translation
✧ I heard a man when we were defeated at al-Jamājim, and we mentioned him to our companions. They said: "This is al-Maʿrūr b. Suwayd." He said: "A man was mentioned to ʿUmar who had gone out from the battle line and was killed. ʿUmar said: 'That I die on my bed is better for me than that I fight in front of a battle line.'"
