Translation

✧ It reached us that Tubba marched to the Kaaba intending to destroy it, and rabbis of the Jews marched with him until, when they were at Marr or Sarif—and some scholars say he reached al-Tanim—darkness covered the land upon them. He summoned the rabbis and asked them, and they said: 'Have you resolved in yourself something concerning this House?' He said: 'Yes, I resolved to destroy it.' They said: 'That is why this darkness has come.' So Tubba made a covenant with Allah: if that darkness were lifted from him, he would venerate the Kaaba and clothe it. Then Allah lifted that darkness, and Tubba traveled until, when he reached the boundary stones of the Haram, he dismounted from his mount, then removed his sandals in reverence for the Haram and as repentance for what he had intended. He said: Then he entered Makkah on foot, barefoot, and circumambulated the House and clothed the Kaaba with the wasa'il [cloth], so it was covered with them. Then he unloaded his baggage and his kitchen in the mountain pass of Abdullah b. Amir b. Karim, and it was called al-Matabikh from that day to this day of the people. And he unloaded his weapons in the mountain pass of Abdullah b. al-Zubayr, and it was called Buqayqi'an from that day to this day of the people. And he unloaded his horses in the mountain pass of Banu Makhzum, and those two passes were called Ajyad al-Asghar and Ajyad al-Akbar to this day of the people. They mentioned that only two men from Hudhayl advised him to destroy the Kaaba. When Allah lifted that darkness, Tubba ordered the two of them, and they were taken out of the Haram and crucified. Some of our scholars claim that the first to clothe the Kaaba was Ismail the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah knows best about that.
