✧ He attended that. He said: Ibn al-Zubayr brought seventy men from the best and most senior of Quraysh to 'A'ishah. She told them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: Were it not for your people's recent time with polytheism, I would have built the House on the foundations of Ibrahim and Isma'il. Do you know why they fell short of the foundations of Ibrahim? She said: No. He said: The funds fell short for them. He said: The Ka'bah had been weakened by the fire of the people of Syria. He said: He demolished it while I was in Makkah that day. He uncovered a foundation in the Hijr, parts holding onto each other, and left it uncovered for eight days to call witnesses. He said: I saw that foundation like the flanks of camels, five stones, one stone on one side and two stones on the other. He said: I saw a man take the pickaxe and shake it from the side of the corner, and the other corner shook. He said: Then he built on that foundation, and made for it two doors attached to the ground, eastern and western. When Ibn al-Zubayr was killed, al-Hajjaj demolished it from the direction of the Hijr and restored it to what it had been. 'Abd al-Malik wrote to him: I wish you had left Ibn al-Zubayr and what he undertook.
