✧ How much one may wipe over the leather socks

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ قَالَ:
أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ فَقَالَ: مَا جَاءَ بِكَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًى بِمَا يَطْلُبُ، قُلْتُ: حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ، وَكُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفْرًا، أَوْ كُنَّا مُسَافِرِينَ، لَا نَنْزِعُ أَخْفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ بِلَيَالِيهِنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ، وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ، قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَسَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ الْهَوَى ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، بَيْنَا أَنَا مَعَهُ فِي مَسِيرَةٍ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ جَهْوَرِيٍّ، - أَوْ قَالَ: جَوْهَرِيٍّ، ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ يَشُكُّ - قَالَ لَهُ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، فَأَجَابَهُ بِنَحْوٍ مِنْ كَلَامِهِ فَقَالَ: مَهْ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا وَلَمْ يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ ؟ قَالَ: هُوَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى قَالَ: إِنَّ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ لَبَابًا مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً، فَتَحَهُ اللهُ لِلتَّوْبَةِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، لَا يُغْلِقُهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ
Translation
✧ I came to Safwan and he said: What brought you? I said: Seeking knowledge. He said: The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge in approval of what he seeks. I said: The matter of wiping over the leather socks after defecation and urination has been troubling me, and you are a man from among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I have come to ask you about that. Have you heard anything from him about it? He said: Yes. He used to command us, when we were traveling or when we were travelers, not to remove our leather socks for three days with their nights, except because of major ritual impurity, but [they may be wiped] from defecation, urination, and sleep. I said to him: Did you hear him mention desire? He said: Yes. While I was with him on a journey, a Bedouin called out to him with a loud voice—or he said: a resounding voice; Ibn Uyayna was unsure—and said to him: O Muhammad. He answered him in a similar manner to his speech and said: Wait. What do you think of a man who loves a people but has not yet caught up with them? He said: On the Day of Resurrection he will be with those he loves. He said: And he kept talking to us until he said: In the direction of the west there is a gate whose width is a journey of seventy years; God opened it for repentance on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and He will not close it until the sun rises from its direction.
