✧ How much one may wipe over the leather socks

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ قَالَ:
أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ فَقَالَ: مَا حَاجَتُكَ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: جِئْتُ أَبْتَغِي الْعِلْمَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ خَارِجٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فِي طَلَبِ عِلْمٍ، إِلَّا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَصْنَعُ، قُلْتُ: جِئْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، كُنْتُ فِي الْجَيْشِ الَّذِي بَعَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَدْخَلْنَاهُمَا عَلَى طُهُورٍ، ثَلَاثًا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا وَلَيْلَةً إِذَا أَقَمْنَا، وَلَا نَخْلَعَهُمَا مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَا نَوْمٍ، وَلَا نَخْلَعَهُمَا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ. قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَفْتُوحًا مَسِيرَتُهُ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً لَا تُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ
Translation
✧ I came to Safwan b. Assal al-Muradi and he said: What do you need? I said: I have come seeking knowledge. He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: No one goes out of his house in search of knowledge but that the angels lower their wings in approval of what he is doing. I said: I have come to ask you about wiping over the leather socks. He said: Yes. I was in the army that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent, and he commanded us to wipe over the leather socks when we had put them on in a state of purity: three [days] when we traveled and one night when we stayed, and not to remove them because of defecation, urination, or sleep, and not to remove them except because of major ritual impurity. He said: And I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: In the west there is an open gate whose width is a journey of seventy years; it will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction.
