عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيِّ - وَكَانَ يَعْمَلُ لِعُمَرَ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَرْقَمِ عَلَى بَيْتِ الْمَالِ - قَالَ:
فَخَرَجَ عُمَرُ لَيْلَةً، وَمَعَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ، وَالنَّاسُ أَوْزَاعٌ مُتَفَرِّقُونَ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ لِنَفْسِهِ، وَيُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ فَيُصَلِّي بِصَلَاتِهِ النَّفَرُ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: إِنِّي لَأَظُنُّ أَنْ لَوْ جَمَعْنَا هَؤُلَاءِ عَلَى قَارِئٍ وَاحِدٍ كَانَ أَفْضَلَ، فَعَزَمَ أَنْ يَجْمَعَهُمْ عَلَى قَارِئٍ وَاحِدٍ، فَأَمَرَ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَأَمَّهُمْ فَخَرَجَ لَيْلَةً، وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ قَارِئِهِمْ، فَقَالَ: " نِعْمَ الْبِدْعَةُ هَذِهِ، وَالَّتِي تَنَامُونَ عَنْهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي تَقُومُونَ، يُرِيدُ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ، وَكَانُوا يَقُومُونَ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ
Translation
✧ One night Umar went out with Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and that was during Ramadan, while the people were scattered groups: a man praying by himself, and a man praying and a small group praying with his prayer. Umar b. al-Khattab said: I think if we gathered these people behind one reciter, it would be better. So he resolved to gather them behind one reciter, and he commanded Ubayy b. Ka'b, who led them. Then he went out one night while the people were praying with the prayer of their reciter, and he said: What an excellent innovation this is! But the one you sleep through is better than the one you stand in—meaning the last part of the night. They used to stand in the first part of the night.
