✧ Give Its Due on the Day of Its Harvest

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ:

كَانَ يُنْهَى أَنْ يُغْلَقَ بَابُ الْحَائِطِ يَوْمَ يُجَدُّ النَّخْلُ، وَيُقْطَفُ الْعِنَبُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْمَسَاكِينِ يَأْكُلُونَ مَا يَسْقُطُ مِنَ النَّخْلِ، وَالْعِنَبِ، وَيُخَلَّى بَيْنَهُمْ، وَبَيْنَ مَا يَسْقُطُ كُلُّهُ، وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يُتْرَكُونَ حَتَّى يَأْخُذَ الْإِنْسَانُ الْهَائِمُ الْحَبَّ، كَذَلِكَ يُتْرَكُونَ وَمَا يَسْقُطُ مِنَ السُّنْبُلِ بَعْدَ الَّذِي يُجَازُونَ مِنْهُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ "، قَالَ: " وَقَدْ أَجْزَأَ عَنْكَ ذَلِكَ إِذَا رَفَعْتَهُ مِنَ الْجَرِينِ

Translation

✧ He used to forbid closing the gate of the garden on the day the dates are cut and the grapes are picked, so that the poor could eat what falls from the palms and the grapes. They were left free with everything that falls, but they are left until a person may glean the grain. Thus they are left, along with what falls from the ears after what is given to them as a due in kindness.” He said: “That suffices you once you have lifted it from the threshing floor.”
