Translation

✧ Sufyān b. ʿAbd Allāh, while collecting charity in the rural districts of al-Ṭāʾif, the livestock owners complained to him about counting the newborn lambs. They said: "If you count the newborns, then take charity from them." Sufyān did not concede anything to them until he met ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He said: "The livestock owners complain to me that I count the newborns, and they say: If you count them, then take charity from them." He said: "Tell them: We count all the newborns, even the lamb that the shepherd brings carrying it on his hand." He said: And he said: "I do not take from them the fattened animal, nor the ram of the flock, nor the nursing ewe, nor the pregnant one; but I take the young she-goat, the jadhaʿah, and the thaniyyah. That is a just balance between the newborns and the best of the wealth. And tell them: We count all the newborns, even the lamb."
