✧ The trial of the grave

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ قَالَ:
مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِقَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ: هَذَا قَبْرُ فُلَانٍ، وَهَذَا قَبْرُ فُلَانٍ، وَهُمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي غَيْرِ كَبِيرٍ وَبَلَى؛ أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ لَا يَتَأَذَّى بِبَوْلِهِ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَكَانَ يَهْمِزُ النَّاسَ " ثُمَّ أَخَذَ جَرِيدَةً رَطْبَةً فَكَسَرَهَا، فَوَضَعَ عَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدَةً وَعَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدَةً، وَقَالَ: " عَسَى أَنْ يُخَفَّفَ عَنْهُمَا الْعَذَابُ مَا دَامَا رَطْبَتَيْنِ، أَوْ رَطْبَيْنِ
Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by two graves and said: 'This is the grave of so-and-so, and this is the grave of so-and-so, and they are being punished without a great sin—yet it is great. As for one of them, he used not to shield himself from his urine, and as for the other, he used to slander people.' Then he took a fresh palm branch, broke it, and placed one on this grave and one on that, and said: 'Perhaps the punishment will be lightened for them as long as the two remain moist—or as long as they remain fresh.'
