✧ The trial of the grave

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ:
إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ تُبْتَلَى فِي قُبُورِهَا، فَإِذَا دَخَلَ الْمُؤْمِنُ قَبْرَهُ وَتَوَلَّى عَنْهُ أَصْحَابُهُ أَتَاهُ مَلَكٌ شَدِيدُ الِانْتِهَارِ، فَقَالَ: مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ ؟ فَيَقُولُ الْمُؤْمِنُ: أَقُولُ إِنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَعَبْدُهُ، فَيَقُولُ لَهُ الْمَلَكُ: اطَّلِعْ إِلَى مَقْعَدِكَ الَّذِي كَانَ لَكَ مِنَ النَّارِ فَقَدْ أَنْجَاكَ اللهُ مِنْهُ وَأَبْدَلَكَ مَكَانَهُ مَقْعَدَكَ الَّذِي تَرَى مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، فَيَرَاهُمَا كِلْتَيْهِمَا، فَيَقُولُ الْمُؤْمِنُ: أُبَشِّرُ أَهْلِي ؟ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: اسْكُنْ فَهَذَا مَقْعَدُكَ أَبَدًا، وَالْمُنَافِقُ إِذَا تَوَلَّى عَنْهُ أَصْحَابُهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ: مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ ؟ فَيَقُولُ: لَا أَدْرِي، أَقُولُ مَا يَقُولُ النَّاسُ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: لَا دَرَيْتَ، انْظُرْ مَقْعَدَكَ الَّذِي كَانَ لَكَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ قَدْ أَبْدَلَكَ اللهُ مَكَانَهُ مَقْعَدَكَ مِنَ النَّارِ
Translation

machine translationʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abū al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh say:
✧ Indeed, this community will be tested in their graves. When the believer enters his grave and his companions leave him, a stern angel comes to him and says: 'What did you say about this man?' The believer says: 'I say that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and His servant.' The angel says to him: 'Look at your seat that was for you in the Fire; Allah has saved you from it and replaced it with your seat that you see in Paradise.' He sees both of them. The believer says: 'Shall I give good news to my family?' It is said to him: 'Be still, for this is your seat forever.' And the hypocrite, when his companions leave him, it is said to him: 'What did you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know; I say what the people say.' It is said to him: 'You did not know. Look at your seat that was for you in Paradise; Allah has replaced it with your seat in the Fire.'
