Translation
✧ One day the Messenger of God ﷺ went out and we went out with him until we reached the graveyard. He ordered us to sit, and we sat. Then he stepped over the graves until he came to one of them and sat beside it. He conversed with it at length. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ raised his voice in loud weeping, and we wept because of his weeping. Then the Prophet ﷺ came forward, and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb met him and said: “What made you weep, O Messenger of God?” He said: “It made us weep and alarmed us.” He took ʿUmar by the hand, then gestured to us, and we came to him. He said: “Did my weeping alarm you?” We said: “Yes, O Messenger of God.” He said: “The grave you saw me at is the grave of my mother Āminah bt. Wahb. I asked my Lord permission to visit her, and He permitted me. Then I asked Him permission to ask forgiveness for her, but He did not permit me. It was revealed: ‘It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists’ (Q 9:113), and ‘Abraham’s asking forgiveness for his father’ (Q 9:114). I was overcome by the tenderness a child feels toward a parent, and that made me weep. Indeed, I had forbidden you three things: visiting graves, eating sacrificial meat beyond three days, and nabīdh in certain vessels. Now visit graves, for they make one renounce this world and remind of the Hereafter. Eat sacrificial meat and spend from it as you wish. I only forbade you when the good was scarce, to give people more room. Indeed, no vessel makes anything unlawful; every intoxicant is unlawful.”
