عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ، عَنِ الْمُطَّرِحِ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ،
أَنَّ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ، قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ، أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ شَهِدْتُ الْجِنَازَةَ حَمْلُهَا وَاجِبٌ عَلَى مَنْ شَهِدَهَا ؟ " قَالَ: لَا، وَلَكِنَّهُ خَيْرٌ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَخَذَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ، فَإِذَا أَنْتَ شَهِدْتَ جِنَازَةً فَقَدِّمْهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ وَاجْعَلْهَا نُصْبًا بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْكَ، فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ مَوْعِظَةٌ وَتَذْكِرَةٌ وَعِبْرَةٌ، فَإِنْ بَدَا لَكَ أَنْ تَحْمِلَ فَانْظُرْ إِلَى مُقَدَّمِ السَّرِيرِ، وَانْظُرْ إِلَى جَانِبِهِ الْأَيْسَرِ فَاجْعَلْهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبِكَ الْأَيْمَنِ
Translation
✧ Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said to ʿAlī: 'O Abū al-Ḥasan, do you think that if I attend a funeral, carrying it is obligatory upon the one who attends it?' He said: 'No, but it is good; so whoever wishes may take hold, and whoever wishes may leave off. When you attend a funeral, place it before you and set it directly between your eyes, for it is only an admonition, a reminder, and a lesson. If it seems good to you to carry, then look to the front of the bier, and look to its left side and place it on your right shoulder.'
