أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا النُّعْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ:
تُوُفِّيَ عَمٌّ لِي بِالْجَنَدِ فَدَخَلْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَلَى ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: هَلْ تَرَى أَنْ أُقَصِّصَ قَبْرَ أَخِي ؟ قَالَ: فَضَحِكَ وَقَالَ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ يَا أَبَا شَيْبَةَ، خَيْرٌ لَكَ أَلَّا تَعْرِفَ قَبْرَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُ فَتَسْتَغْفِرَ لَهُ وَتَدْعُوَ لَهُ، أَمَا عَلِمْتَ " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ قُبُورِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَنْ يُبْنَى عَلَيْهَا أَوْ تُجَصَّصَ أَوْ تُزْدَرَعَ، فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ قُبُورِكُمُ الَّتِي لَا تُعْرَفُ
Translation
✧ A paternal uncle of mine died at al-Janad. I entered with my father upon Ibn Tawus, and he said: "O Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman, do you think I should plaster the grave of my brother?" He laughed and said: "Glory be to God, O Abu Shayba! It is better for you not to know his grave unless you come to it to seek forgiveness for him and supplicate for him. Do you not know that the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade building over the graves of Muslims, plastering them, or cultivating them? Indeed, the best of your graves are those that are unknown."
