✧ The virtue of following funerals

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ هُشَيْمِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقُرَشِيِّ قَالَ:
مَرَّ ابْنُ عُمَرَ بِأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: مَنِ اتَّبَعَ جِنَازَةً فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَإِنْ شَهِدَ دَفْنَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أُحُدٍ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: بَعْضَ حَدِيثِكَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: فَقَامَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ حَتَّى انْطَلَقَ بِهِ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنْشُدُكِ بِاللهِ، أَسَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: " مَنْ تَبِعَ جِنَازَةً فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَإِنْ شَهِدَ دَفْنَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ، وَالْقِيرَاطُ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أُحُدٍ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَشْغَلُنِي غَرْسُ الْوَدِيِّ وَلَا صَفْقٌ بِالْأَسْوَاقِ، إِنَّمَا كُنْتُ أَطْلُبُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَكْلَةً يُطْعِمُنِيهَا أَوْ كَلِمَةً يُعَلِّمُنِيهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ كُنْتَ أَلْزَمَنَا لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَعْلَمَنَا بِحَدِيثِهِ
Translation
✧ Ibn ʿUmar passed by Abū Hurayrah while he was narrating from the Prophet ﷺ: Whoever follows a funeral and prays over it has a qīrāṭ, and if he witnesses its burial he has two qīrāṭs, greater than Uḥud. Ibn ʿUmar said: Part of your hadith, Abū Hurayrah, is from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: Abū Hurayrah stood up, took Ibn ʿUmar by the hand, and went with him to ʿĀʾishah. Abū Hurayrah said to her: I adjure you by God, did you hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever follows a funeral and prays over it has a qīrāṭ, and if he witnesses its burial he has two qīrāṭs, and the qīrāṭ is greater than Uḥud'? ʿĀʾishah said: O God, yes. Abū Hurayrah said: Planting palm shoots and trading in the markets did not keep me busy; I only sought from the Messenger of God ﷺ a morsel to feed me or a word to teach me. Ibn ʿUmar said to him: You, Abū Hurayrah, were the most constant of us in accompanying the Messenger of God ﷺ and the most knowledgeable of us of his hadith.
