✧ Walking in front of the funeral

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ بْنِ أَوْسٍ الْكِنْدِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ فِي جِنَازَةٍ قَالَ: وَعَلِيٌّ آخِذٌ بِيَدِي وَنَحْنُ خَلْفَهَا، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَمْشِيَانِ أَمَامَهَا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ فَضْلَ الْمَاشِي خَلْفَهَا عَلَى الَّذِي يَمْشِي أَمَامَهَا كَفَضْلِ صَلَاةِ الْجَمَاعَةِ عَلَى صَلَاةِ الْفَذِّ، وَإِنَّهُمَا لَيَعْلَمَانِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا أَعْلَمُ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا لَا يُحِبَّانِ أَنْ يَشُقَّا عَلَى النَّاسِ
Translation
✧ I was with ʿAlī in a funeral procession. He said: ʿAlī was holding my hand while we were behind it, and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were walking in front of it. He said: The virtue of the one walking behind it over the one walking in front of it is like the virtue of the congregational prayer over the prayer of one praying alone. They both know of that what I know, but they did not like to make things difficult for the people.
