Translation

✧ A person asked Makhul, while I was listening and he was sitting with Ata, about the words of Allah: "Only the believers are those who believe in Allah" up to His words "and when they are with him on a matter of common concern". Makhul said: "It is acted upon now, so it is proper that no one should leave on Friday or in a military expedition until he asks permission of the imam." He said: And likewise in any matter of common concern. Do you not see that He says: "And when they are with him on a matter of common concern"? Ata then said: By my life, I saw people in the past asking permission of the imam when they stood up while he was delivering the khutbah. I said: How did you see them asking permission? He said: A man would gesture with his hand, and Ata gestured to me with his right hand. I said: He gestures and does not speak? He said: Yes. I said: And when the imam gives permission? He said: He gestures and does not speak. I said: Does a person not put his hand over his nose or his garment? He said: No.
