أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَعْقُوبَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ الدَّبَرِيُّ قَالَ: قَرَأْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ:
جَمَّعَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقْدَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْزِلَ الْجُمُعَةُ وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ سَمَّوْهَا الْجُمُعَةَ، فَقَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ: لِلْيَهُودِ يَوْمٌ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فِيهِ كُلَّ سَبْعَةِ أَيَّامٍ، وَلِلنَّصَارَى أَيْضًا مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ، فَهَلُمَّ فَلْنَجْعَلْ يَوْمًا نَجْتَمِعُ وَنَذْكُرُ اللهَ وَنُصَلِّي وَنَشْكُرُهُ فِيهِ، أَوْ كَمَا قَالُوا، فَقَالُوا: يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ لِلْيَهُودِ، وَيَوْمُ الْأَحَدِ لِلنَّصَارَى، فَاجْعَلُوهُ يَوْمَ الْعَرُوبَةِ، وَكَانُوا يُسَمُّونَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ يَوْمَ الْعَرُوبَةِ، فَاجْتَمَعُوا إِلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَذَكَّرَهُمْ، فَسَمَّوْهُ الْجُمُعَةَ، حَتَّى اجْتَمَعُوا إِلَيْهِ، فَذَبَحَ أَسْعَدُ بْنُ زُرَارَةَ لَهُمْ شَاةً فَتَغَدَّوْا وَتَعَشَّوْا مِنْ شَاةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، وَذَلِكَ لِقِلَّتِهِمْ "، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ فِي ذَلِكَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ: ﴿إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ ﴾
Translation
✧ The people of Madinah held the Friday prayer before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived and before the Friday prayer was revealed. They were the ones who named it al-Jumuʿah. The Anṣār said: “The Jews have a day on which they gather every seven days, and the Christians likewise. Come, let us make a day on which we gather and remember Allah, pray, and thank Him” – or as they said. They said: “Saturday is for the Jews, Sunday is for the Christians, so make it the Day of ʿArūbah.” They used to call Friday the Day of ʿArūbah. So they gathered to Asʿad b. Zurārah, and he prayed with them that day and reminded them. They named it al-Jumuʿah. When they gathered to him, Asʿad b. Zurārah slaughtered a sheep for them, and they had lunch and dinner from a single sheep, because of their small number. Then Allah revealed concerning that afterwards: “When the call is made for prayer on the day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah.”
