✧ How Many Rak'ahs Is the Witr

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عُتْبَةُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، أَنَّ عِكْرِمَةَ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ:
وَفَدَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ، فَكَانَا يَسْمُرَانِ حَتَّى شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ فَأَكْثَرَ، قَالَ: فَشَهِدَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فِي الْمَقْصُورَةِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مُعَاوِيَةُ رَكَعَ رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهَا، وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، قَالَ: فَجِئْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: أَلَا أَضْحَكُ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ، ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهَا ؟ قَالَ: أَصَابَ أَيْ بُنَيَّ، لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَعْلَمَ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ وَاحِدَةٌ أَوْ خَمْسٌ أَوْ سَبْعٌ أَوْ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، يُوتِرُ بِمَا شَاءَ، فَأَخْبَرْتُ عَطَاءً خَبَرَ عُتْبَةَ هَذَا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا سَمِعْنَا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَصَابَ، أَوَلَيْسَ الْمَغْرِبُ - عَطَاءٌ الْقَائِلُ - ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ ؟
Translation
✧ Ibn Abbas came as a delegate to Mu'awiya in Syria. They used to converse at night until midnight or more. He said: One night Ibn Abbas attended the last Isha prayer with Mu'awiya in the maqsura. When Mu'awiya finished, he prayed one rak'ah and did not add to it, while I was looking at him. He said: I went to Ibn Abbas and said to him: Shall I not laugh at Mu'awiya? He prayed Isha, then performed the witr with one rak'ah and did not add to it. He said: He did right, my son. None of us is more knowledgeable than Mu'awiya. It is only one, five, seven, or more than that; he performs the witr with whatever he wishes. I informed Ata of this report of Utba, and he said: We only heard that he said: He did right. Is not the Maghrib—Ata is the speaker—three rak'ahs?
