✧ Supererogatory Prayer While Traveling

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عِيسَى بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ:
صَلَّى ابْنُ عُمَرَ صَلَاةً مِنْ صَلَاةِ النَّهَارِ فِي السَّفَرِ، فَرَأَى بَعْضَهُمْ يُسَبِّحُ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: مَا يَصْنَعُونَ ؟ قِيلَ لَهُ: يُسَبِّحُونَ قَالَ: " لَوْ كُنْتُ مُسَبِّحًا لَأَتْمَمْتُ الصَّلَاةَ، حَجَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ لَا يُسَبِّحُ بِالنَّهَارِ، وَحَجَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَكَانَ لَا يُسَبِّحُ بِالنَّهَارِ، وَحَجَجْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ فَكَانَ لَا يُسَبِّحُ بِالنَّهَارِ، وَحَجَجْتُ مَعَ عُثْمَانَ فَكَانَ لَا يُسَبِّحُ بِالنَّهَارِ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: ﴿لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ ﴾
Translation
✧ Ibn ‘Umar prayed one of the daytime prayers while traveling, and he saw some of them performing supererogatory prayer. Ibn ‘Umar said, 'What are they doing?' It was said to him, 'They are performing supererogatory prayer.' He said, 'If I were to perform supererogatory prayer, I would complete the prayer. I performed Hajj with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he did not perform supererogatory prayer during the day; I performed Hajj with Abu Bakr, and he did not perform supererogatory prayer during the day; I performed Hajj with ‘Umar, and he did not perform supererogatory prayer during the day; and I performed Hajj with ‘Uthman, and he did not perform supererogatory prayer during the day.' Then Ibn ‘Umar said, 'You have in the Messenger of God an excellent example.'
