عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ:
أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، إِنَّ أَصْحَابَكَ - لِأَصْحَابِهِ الْأَوَّلِينَ - سَبَقُونَا بِالْأَعْمَالِ، فَقَالَ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ تَصْنَعُونَهُ بَعْدَ الْمَكْتُوبَاتِ، تُدْرِكُونَ بِهِ مَنْ سَبَقَكُمْ، وَتَسْبِقُونَ بِهِ مَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُكَبِّرُوا أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَيُسَبِّحُوا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَيُحَمِّدُوا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَخْبَرَنَا عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ رَجُلٌ قَالَ: فَجَاءَهُ الْمَسَاكِينُ فَقَالُوا: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، غَلَبَنَا أُولُو الدَّثْرِ عَلَى الْأَجْرِ، فَأْمُرْنَا بِعَمَلٍ نُدْرِكُ بِهِ أَعْمَالَهُمْ، فَأَخْبَرَهُمْ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ عَطَاءٌ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَمْوَالِ أَخَذُوا بِهِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ الْمَسَاكِينُ جَاءُوا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ، فَقَالَ: " هِيَ الْفَضَائِلُ
Translation
✧ Some of his companions came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Prophet of Allah, your companions—meaning the earlier companions—have surpassed us in deeds. He said: "Shall I not inform you of something you can do after the obligatory prayers, by which you will catch up with those who preceded you and surpass those who come after you?" They said: Yes, O Prophet of Allah. So he commanded them to say Allāhu Akbar thirty-four times, Subḥān Allāh thirty-three times, and Alḥamdu lillāh thirty-three times. He said: Then a man informed us about that; he said: The poor came to him and said: O Prophet of Allah, the wealthy have overtaken us in reward, so command us with an action by which we can catch up with their deeds. He told them the same as what ‘Aṭā’ said. When the owners of wealth learned of it, they took it up. When the poor saw that, they came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and he said: "These are the virtues."
