عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ كَانَ مَعِيَ عَصًا ذِرَاعٌ قَطُّ، مِنْهَا فِي الْأَرْضِ قَدْرُ أَرْبَعِ أَصَابِعَ، خَالِصُهَا عَلَى ظَهْرِ الْأَرْضِ أَدْنَى مِنْ ذِرَاعٍ قَالَ: " لَا، حَتَّى يَكُونَ خَالِصُهَا عَلَى ظَهْرِ الْأَرْضِ ذِرَاعٌ "
Translation

✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: "What do you think if I have a staff that is only a cubit, of which four fingers are in the ground, so that its visible part above the ground is less than a cubit?" He said: "No, not until its visible part above the ground is a cubit."
