We were with al-Shaʿbī when two men were brought to him, a Muslim and a Christian, each of whom had accused the other of fornication. He lashed the Christian eighty lashes for the Muslim, and said to the Christian: "What is in you is greater than his accusation of you," and he let him go. That was reported to ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, so he wrote about it to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, mentioning what al-Shaʿbī had done. ʿUmar wrote approving of al-Shaʿbī's action.
