✧ What to say when hearing the adhan and remaining silent for it

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ مُجَمِّعٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ،

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ بْنَ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، حِينَ سَمِعَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ، كَبَّرَ وَتَشَهَّدَ بِمَا تَشَهَّدَ بِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَكَذَا حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنَّهُ: سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: كَمَا قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ، فَإِذَا قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ: وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، ثُمَّ سَكَتَ

Translation

✧ That he heard Abu Umama b. Sahl b. Hunayf, when he heard the muezzin, say the takbir and testify as he testified. Then he said: Thus Mu'awiya narrated to us that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: as the muezzin said. When he said: I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, he said: And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, then he fell silent.
