Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq 1844
✧ Prayer is better than sleep
1844 1827 - عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ مُسْلِمٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ طَاوُسًا جَالِسًا مَعَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، مَتَى قِيلَ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ؟ فَقَالَ طَاوُسٌ: أَمَا إِنَّهَا لَمْ تُقَلْ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَلَكِنَّ بِلَالًا سَمِعَهَا فِي زَمَانِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُهَا: رَجُلٌ غَيْرُ مُؤَذِّنٍ، فَأَخَذَهَا مِنْهُ، فَأَذَّنَ بِهَا فَلَمْ يَمْكُثْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِلَّا قَلِيلَا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عُمَرُ قَالَ: لَوْ نَهَيْنَا بِلَالًا عَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي أَحْدَثَ، وَكَأَنَّهُ نَسِيَهُ فَأَذَّنَ بِهِ النَّاسُ حَتَّى الْيَوْمِ.
Translation
✧ 1844 1827 - Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj who said: Ibn Muslim informed me that a man asked Tawus, who was sitting with the people, 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, when was "prayer is better than sleep" said?' Tawus replied, 'It was not said during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but Bilal heard it during the time of Abu Bakr after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from a man who was not a muezzin, so he took it from him and used it in the call to prayer. Abu Bakr did not remain long before Umar said, "If only we had forbidden Bilal from this innovation," but it was as if he forgot it, and the people have used it in the call to prayer until today.'
