✧ The beginning of the call to prayer

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، كَانَ يَقُولُ:
كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَاةَ لَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ: اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: بَلْ بُوقًا مِثْلَ بُوقِ الْيَهُودِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَوَلَا تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلًا يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَاةِ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: يَا بِلَالُ، قُمْ فَأَذِّنْ بِالصَّلَاةِ
Translation
✧ When the Muslims came to Madinah, they would gather and estimate the time of prayer, and no one called to it. One day they discussed that. Some of them said to others: Take a bell like the bell of the Christians; others said: Rather a horn like the horn of the Jews. 'Umar said: Why not send a man to call to prayer? The Prophet ﷺ said: O Bilal, stand and give the call to prayer.
