A man from Khathʿam died in a land of the Sawād, and he had two men from the People of the Book witness his will, either two Jews or two Christians. The matter was brought to Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, "and he made them swear after the ʿAṣr prayer by Allah, besides whom there is no god, that this was his will exactly, that they had not altered it, nor changed it, nor concealed anything. Then he permitted it."
