ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb separated a woman who had married during her waiting period (ʿiddah) from her husband. Then he ruled that any woman who marries during her waiting period, and her husband has not consummated the marriage with her, the two are to be separated, and she completes what remains of her waiting period. When it has ended, her other husband may propose to her among the suitors; if she wishes she may marry him, and if she wishes she may leave him. But if he had consummated the marriage with her, the two are to be separated, and then they may never be reunited. She completes her waiting period from the first husband, and then observes a waiting period from the other.
